Brain surgery without opening the skull
Drawing on the combined expertise of two types of specialized surgeons, the Jewish General Hospital (JGH) is increasingly using a form of surgery that provides access to tumours in the brain and elsewhere deep within the head, without the need to open the skull. Using a multi-disciplinary team approach, surgeons focus on removing tumours that are located underneath the base of the brain and can be safely removed through the nostrils with an endoscope, a thin, flexible tube with a light at its tip.

As of April 1, 2013 patients and visitors to the Jewish General Hospital (JGH) are asked not to use the Emergency Department entrance on Côte-Ste-Catherine Road to pick-up or drop-off patients not requiring urgent care. Rather the entrance located at  5757 Légaré Street and the main entrance located at 3755 Côte-Ste-Catherine Road are to be used whenever possible.

New laser treatment replaces surgery to treat vocal cord lesions
A new generation of laser is replacing a traditional type of throat surgery—and the Jewish General Hospital (JGH) is the first in Canada to use it. A JGH physician has successfully performed office-based laryngeal procedures to treat benign or pre-cancerous laryngeal lesions in the throat using a Potassium-Titanyl-Phosphate (KTP) laser. This innovative treatment uses a small deflectable laser inserted through a scope in the throat, all without radiation therapy or traditional surgery, which can permanently damage vocal quality.

LDI oncologist among international experts calling for urgent global action on cancer

Study shows majority of smokers re-ignite their habit following heart attack
A new study reveals that two-thirds of middle aged smokers who have been hospitalized for acute myocardial infarction resume smoking within twelve months, despite being treated with bupropion (sold as Zyban), which is prescribed to help those trying to quit because of its demonstrated capacity to reduce nicotine cravings and withdrawal symptoms without increasing heart rate or blood pressure the way nicotine replacement therapies will.
